Fasba Fpel is a multimedia art project originally formed by Sean Hunt, Huck Mendoza, and Donny Smudge as a progressive metal band in early 2013. After failing to find a vocalist, the group decided to attempt to sing themselves. This led to Sean developing new ways for the group to practice, often in the form of challenges to expand their capabilities in ways outside of their usual instruments. These practices were recorded, typically lasted 40-60 minutes, and sometimes involved Donny Smudge's brother (Brian Aughey) or another musician that was around that particular day. After recording a 40 minute challenge in which they attempted to make sound with instruments but not make music, they decided it was a shame to not let the entire world hear it or any of the other odd sounds they had made. They found beauty in the music that could never be created without the spontaneous improvisation and wanted to spread the message that artists should not be afraid to release what comes naturally to them. While releasing their first album, “Prologue,” the band decided to challenge themselves to release more music than any other band. But in order to keep it fresh they needed input from as many musicians as possible.
The group started releasing an album every week and then began to involve guest stars. They brought in a new engineer (Travis Cross) then cameramen like Matt Saari, Brian Cavanaugh, Brooks Branscomb and Mitch Hampton, the face painting skills of Jez Roberts, and lights added by Matt Saari, Mitch, or Breanna Bonker. After almost a year of releasing jam albums, Donny Smudge left the group under peaceful terms, though he still makes appearances on albums occasionally.
Today, Fasba Fpel has released over 100 albums and is attempting to release 100 albums within the year of 2015 alone. This means December will be filled with releases of collections of test jams as well as some of the old jams from 2013 that are still needing to be mastered. The group is also planning to release more albums in the vein of the one you have just purchased, with some really great guest stars, so please follow us on the interwebs to find out all that will happen with Fasba Fpel next!
